US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed reports that he may leave President Donald Trump’s administration following the Republican Party’s setbacks in the November 2026 midterm elections. The speculation also linked US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor to possible senior positions in the administration, including secretary of state and White House chief of staff.

In an interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Rubio said serving Trump until the end of his presidential term had always been his plan. He also ruled out discussing the 2028 presidential race, saying he would no longer comment on the subject.
Rubio currently holds two key positions in the administration: secretary of state and national security adviser. Earlier reports suggested that he was considering his options after the Republican Party’s midterm losses, with speculation that he could leave to prepare for a possible presidential campaign in 2028.
Sergio Gor Rejects Promotion Speculation
Meanwhile, Sergio Gor has strongly rejected reports that he is being considered for a bigger role in Trump’s administration. According to reports, his name had surfaced in discussions for positions such as secretary of state, replacing Rubio, or White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles. The deputy secretary of state position held by Chris Landau was also reportedly mentioned.
Gor dismissed the speculation, saying he had no interest in another position and had not discussed taking up a different role with anyone. He praised Rubio, describing him as irreplaceable and a close friend.
The White House and the State Department have also rejected reports of an imminent leadership change, calling the claims based on anonymous sources inaccurate.
Why the Reshuffle Speculation Emerged
The reports emerged after Republicans suffered significant setbacks in the November 3 midterm elections, triggering questions about possible changes in Trump’s administration. Bloomberg reported that Rubio and his advisers were reviewing his future options, although no decision or departure timeline had been established.
Separately, a report by The Washington Sun cited people familiar with internal discussions who said Gor’s name had come up for senior administration roles. Gor, a former White House personnel official and close Trump associate, has gained visibility through his diplomatic engagements as US ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asia.
However, neither Rubio nor Gor has announced plans to leave their current positions or pursue a change in roles. The reported leadership changes remain speculation, with both men publicly dismissing the claims.
