India is set to introduce advanced full-body scanners at eight airports as part of efforts to strengthen aviation security. The airports approved for the technology are Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi and Ahmedabad.

Three of the eight airports have already received the scanners, while installation at the remaining five is expected to be completed shortly. Authorities are currently collecting and analysing data from the machines to improve accuracy and minimise false alarms.
The scanners are designed to be “picture-agnostic”. Instead of displaying an actual image of a passenger, they generate a generic 3D representation and flag only suspected concealed or worn objects. The technology is also being adapted to distinguish Indian clothing and permitted items such as mangalsutras and religious threads.
