Akasa Air is in discussions to place an order for more than 200 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft as the airline looks to expand its fleet and strengthen its presence in India’s growing aviation market, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg.
The Mumbai-based airline, which began operations in 2022, already has orders for 183 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. A new order of more than 200 jets would allow the carrier to continue expanding its fleet beyond 2032 and secure aircraft deliveries well into the next decade.
Akasa currently operates a fleet of more than 40 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft and has continued to receive new planes. The airline has taken delivery of nine aircraft so far this calendar year.
A decision on the potential order is expected early next year, while the commercial terms could be finalised in the second half of 2027, according to the sources.
The proposed order comes as Akasa accelerates its domestic and international expansion. The airline is targeting a 60:40 split between domestic and international capacity over the next two to three years, with a larger share of its fleet expected to be deployed on international routes as aircraft deliveries increase.
Akasa’s international operations have already recorded significant growth. Data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed that the airline carried 400,525 international passengers during the first half of 2026, surpassing the 368,743 international passengers it carried throughout 2025.
Akasa Air CEO Vinay Dube had earlier said the airline expects a 60:40 domestic-to-international capacity mix within two to three years. He said the target would become achievable as aircraft deliveries improve and more capacity can be allocated to international markets.
The potential Boeing order would mark another major expansion step for Akasa, which is building its fleet around the 737 MAX and increasing its presence across both domestic and international markets.
