Russia has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed their willingness to help find a solution to the ongoing Ukraine war during their meetings on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed the offer from both leaders. According to news agency Reuters, Peskov said Modi and Xi showed strong interest in efforts to resolve the conflict and offered their support in finding a possible settlement.
The development comes as US President Donald Trump continues efforts to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with President Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The two leaders discussed strengthening India-Russia trade relations, including the implementation of the Programme for Economic Cooperation 2030.
Their discussions also covered cooperation in infrastructure, energy, technology, defence and culture. Modi and Putin had previously met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek on August 31.
After the meeting, Modi said the two countries discussed ways to further strengthen trade ties and expand cooperation across several sectors.
The Ministry of External Affairs said Modi and Putin also exchanged views on important regional and global developments. Their discussions included the conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, which have affected maritime trade as well as the safety and security of Indian seafarers.
Modi reiterated India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward in resolving conflicts. He also said India remains ready to contribute to peace efforts.
The discussions come as India continues to use its BRICS presidency to push for greater international cooperation and address major global challenges.
