Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in New Delhi ahead of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, which India will host at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13. India assumed the BRICS chairship in January 2026, with this year’s theme focused on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability.
Putin’s visit comes at an important stage in India-Russia relations, with both sides looking to expand cooperation beyond traditional defence and energy ties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Putin are scheduled to hold bilateral talks on September 11.
Defence cooperation is expected to be a key part of the discussions. The agenda could include the delivery of remaining S-400 systems, Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter and upgrades to the jointly developed BrahMos missile system.
Economic ties are also expected to receive attention. India and Russia are looking to diversify bilateral trade, expand investment and explore greater use of local currencies in transactions. Critical minerals and supply-chain cooperation are also emerging as areas of potential partnership.
Ahead of the visit, Russia has highlighted the warm reception for Putin in India and the enduring friendship between the two countries. The visit comes as India seeks to balance its expanding global partnerships while maintaining its longstanding strategic relationship with Moscow.
The BRICS Summit will bring together leaders from the expanded grouping for discussions on global governance, trade, investment, energy security, food security and the wider global economic environment.
