Kerala is preparing to develop the 622-km NH 66 stretch from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram as India’s first electric truck corridor.
A study by the Kerala State Electricity Board and the International Council on Clean Transportation estimates that an initial charging network of 12.5 MW will be required, with an investment of around ₹19 crore.
The plan involves installing charging infrastructure along the highway while strengthening the electricity network to support the growing use of electric trucks.
The study estimates that the corridor could eventually require 1,939 chargers with a combined capacity of 204.5 MW by 2050. Kochi, Kozhikode and Kollam are expected to emerge as key charging hubs.
The initiative is aimed at preparing Kerala’s freight transport and power infrastructure for a gradual shift from diesel-powered trucks to electric vehicles.
