Kerala Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph has reacted to the Tamil Nadu government’s announcement of efforts to increase the water level of the Mullaperiyar Dam, calling the move unfortunate and stating that Kerala will hold discussions with Tamil Nadu on the matter.
The minister said Kerala also plans to seek discussions with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister regarding the issue. He clarified that the current water level of the Mullaperiyar Dam is maintained at 142 feet as per Supreme Court directions and that neither state government has the authority to change it independently.
Mons Joseph reiterated Kerala’s long-standing position that a new dam should be constructed at Mullaperiyar. He said the state’s view is that any decision taken by the Supreme Court should be acceptable to both Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The reaction comes after the Tamil Nadu government, led by Vijay, announced during its first budget presentation that it would work towards increasing the water level of the Mullaperiyar Dam in line with existing agreements, tribunal decisions and court directives.
Tamil Nadu stated that it would continue protecting its water rights, safeguarding its interests in inter-state river water sharing and speeding up projects aimed at ensuring long-term water security.
The Mullaperiyar Dam issue has remained a long-standing dispute between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with Kerala raising concerns over dam safety and demanding a new structure, while Tamil Nadu focuses on maintaining water availability for its agricultural needs.
