Indian Railways has developed a solar-assisted passenger coach that uses rooftop solar panels to power essential onboard facilities such as lights, fans, and mobile charging points. The initiative aims to improve energy efficiency and promote the use of renewable energy in railway operations.
According to reports, the pilot project has been developed by the North Central Railway (NCR) in Prayagraj and is expected to become a model for future energy-efficient passenger coaches across the country.
The solar-assisted coach is part of Indian Railways’ larger sustainability plan focused on reducing carbon emissions, lowering energy consumption, and increasing the adoption of clean energy solutions.
How the Solar-Assisted Coach Works
The newly developed coach is fitted with high-efficiency rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) panels capable of generating nearly 7 kWp of electricity.
The solar system works along with the existing electrical setup rather than replacing it. The electricity generated from sunlight is used to charge the coach’s battery bank, which powers essential passenger facilities including:
- Interior lighting
- Ceiling fans
- Mobile charging sockets
How It Differs From Traditional Coaches
Traditional railway coaches depend on axle-driven alternators for electricity generation. These systems are mechanically connected to the train’s axle and produce power only when the train is moving.
The solar-assisted coach, however, generates electricity directly from sunlight, even when the train is stationary at a railway station or yard. This allows the batteries to continue charging whenever sunlight is available, reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Benefits for Passengers and Railways
According to North Central Railway officials, the solar-powered system offers multiple operational and environmental advantages.
By meeting a portion of the coach’s electricity needs through solar energy, the system can reduce pressure on conventional charging methods. It is also expected to help in:
- Lower mechanical wear
- Reduced maintenance requirements
- Longer battery life
- Lower carbon emissions
Pilot Project Under Monitoring
The solar-assisted coach is being closely monitored by North Central Railway. General Manager Naresh Pal Singh recently inspected the coach and reviewed its performance, appreciating the efforts of the engineering and technical teams involved in the project.
Railway officials have described the initiative as an important step towards making passenger coaches more energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable.
Future Expansion Plans
Currently, the solar-assisted coach remains a pilot project. If operational trials show successful results, Indian Railways may introduce similar solar technology across more passenger coaches in the future, further strengthening its focus on renewable energy and sustainable transportation.
