Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone in its green mobility journey with the successful trial of the country’s first hydrogen-powered train. The train has completed more than 1,200 kilometres of testing, showcasing the potential of hydrogen technology in transforming rail transport.
The trial runs resulted in savings of more than 3,200 litres of diesel, highlighting the environmental and economic benefits of adopting hydrogen-powered trains. Unlike conventional diesel locomotives, hydrogen trains produce only water vapour as emissions, making them a cleaner alternative for sustainable transportation.
The project forms part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions, improve energy efficiency and diversify its fuel sources. If implemented on a larger scale, hydrogen-powered trains could significantly reduce the railway network’s dependence on fossil fuels.
