The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a new rule requiring motorists to pay unpaid national highway tolls within three days of receiving an e-notice. If the payment is not cleared within this period, double toll charges will be imposed.

The rule is part of India’s upcoming Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system, which will allow vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping. Instead of barriers, toll charges will be tracked electronically and communicated to vehicle owners through digital notices.
Officials said that if the toll is paid within 72 hours, a 50% discount on the penalty will apply, meaning users effectively pay only the original toll amount. However, if dues remain unpaid, vehicle-related services linked to the Registration Certificate (RC), including ownership transfer, renewal, or interstate movement, could be blocked until payment is made.
The government has already invited bids to implement MLFF tolling at 16 locations across India, including sites in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, as part of plans to expand the barrier-less toll system nationwide.
The move aims to improve traffic flow on highways while ensuring compliance through digital monitoring and automated penalties.
