Deepinder Goyal-backed aviation venture Zomato has taken a major step in strengthening its technology base. LAT Aerospace has acquired Gurugram-based early-stage defence robotics startup Sharang Shakti, marking its first acquisition as the company builds its foundational capabilities.

The move signals the company’s early push to develop advanced technologies that will support both defence applications and future aviation platforms.

First step toward indigenous defence capabilities

Announcing the development on February 24 through a social media post, Deepinder Goyal described the acquisition as the company’s first step toward building indigenous defence capabilities. He noted that the initiative also aligns with LAT Aerospace’s broader vision of developing next-generation civil aviation platforms from India.

The acquisition reflects the company’s long-term strategy of strengthening domestic technological expertise while contributing to India’s aerospace ecosystem.

Expanding beyond regional aviation plans

LAT Aerospace was initially focused on improving regional air connectivity. However, the company is now expanding its scope by building strong in-house capabilities in key technological areas such as autonomy, sensing, and control systems.

These technologies play a critical role in both defence and civilian aircraft, highlighting the company’s dual-use approach to innovation.

Focus on shared aviation and defence technologies

According to Goyal, defence and civil aviation are often seen as separate sectors, but both rely on similar core technologies. These include autonomy, perception, sensing, navigation, guidance, and control systems.

By strengthening capabilities in these areas, LAT Aerospace aims to create a robust technology foundation that can support advanced aviation systems across multiple sectors.

Strengthening long-term technology development

The acquisition of Sharang Shakti represents an important step in LAT Aerospace’s effort to build advanced technological infrastructure in India. By investing in core systems and innovation, the company is positioning itself to play a role in both defence technology development and the future of civil aviation.
