Can you carry liquor on Indian Railways trains?

The Indian Railways has clarified that passengers are not permitted to carry or consume alcohol bottles on trains, as doing so may lead to denial or confiscation.

If you’re planning to board a train in India, be cautious about what’s in your luggage. The Indian Railways has made it clear that carrying alcohol bottles while travelling on trains is not permitted, a rule that applies across all classes and routes.

Alcohol ban on Indian trains

Officials clarified that while some passengers assume personal liquor is acceptable for transport, railway bylaws strictly forbid the possession or consumption of alcohol onboard. The ban is intended to ensure safety, prevent unruly behaviour, and maintain a family-friendly travel environment for millions of passengers each day.

Even sealed bottles purchased legally from duty-free shops or state outlets are not allowed in your baggage during train travel. Security personnel at stations are authorised to inspect luggage, and any liquor found may be confiscated immediately. In some cases, passengers could face penalties under the Railways Act for violating carriage regulations.

Exceptions exist only for those travelling under special permissions, such as authorized service catering or transport under excise supervision, which are subject to official documentation and approval.

Officials also warned that drinking alcohol during the journey is a punishable offence. The rule holds even in states where liquor is legal, as trains fall under central jurisdiction once in motion.

Travellers are urged to follow these guidelines to avoid inconvenience or legal trouble. With festive travel and long-distance journeys increasing, authorities are stepping up random baggage checks to ensure compliance and a comfortable experience for all passengers.
