Born in New Mexico to Chinese immigrant physicists, Alexandr Wang showed an early aptitude for technology and innovation. He attended MIT but left to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions, co-founding Scale AI at just 19 years old alongside his friend Lucy Guo.
Building Scale AI
Wang and Guo began their startup journey with long hours and modest beginnings, often sleeping on air mattresses while working tirelessly to grow their company. Scale AI specializes in providing large volumes of labeled data, essential for training advanced AI systems. It manages gig workers through platforms such as Rotasks and Outlier. By May 2024, Scale AI had reached a valuation of nearly $14 billion, backed by major investors including Meta, Nvidia, and Amazon.
Rise in the AI Industry
Wang’s work with Scale AI quickly attracted attention from the tech world. His innovative approach and deep understanding of AI infrastructure positioned him as a leading figure in the industry. He built strong connections across Silicon Valley and Washington D.C., collaborating with AI experts like Sam Altman of OpenAI and engaging with U.S. policymakers.
Joining Meta
In 2025, Meta appointed Wang as Chief AI Officer, placing him in charge of Meta Superintelligence Labs. He now oversees the company’s superintelligence program, as well as all AI product and research teams. Under his leadership, Meta has restructured its AI teams into four specialized groups focused on research, product development, and infrastructure, aiming to drive long-term breakthroughs in AI.
