During the ongoing Monsoon Session, the Parliament canteen has introduced a new ‘Health Menu’ designed to promote better eating habits among Members of Parliament, officials, and visitors. The updated menu blends traditional Indian dishes with nutritious, low-calorie ingredients to support a healthier lifestyle.
Millet-Based Dishes Take Center Stage
Millets such as ragi and jowar are key ingredients in several dishes like Ragi Millet Idli with Sambhar, Jowar Upma, and sugar-free Mixed Millet Kheer. The increased focus on millets follows their spotlight during the International Year of Millets in 2023.
Balanced Options for All
The menu includes a variety of high-fibre salads like Barley Salad, Jowar Salad, and Garden Fresh Salad, along with protein-rich soups such as Roast Tomato Basil Shorba and Vegetable Clear Soup. Popular Indian snacks like Chana Chaat and Moong Dal Chilla are also part of the offering.
Non-Vegetarian and Beverage Choices
Healthier meat options like Grilled Chicken with Boiled Vegetables and Grilled Fish have been added. Sugary drinks have been replaced with green tea, herbal teas, Masala Sattu, and jaggery-based Mango Panna, reflecting India’s traditional health drinks.
Guided by Health-Focused Leadership
The new menu is an initiative led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, aiming to improve well-being during Parliament sessions. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on balanced diets in his Mann Ki Baat speeches, the menu follows guidelines such as reduced use of oil and lower sodium content.
Calorie Counts and Ingredient Benefits
Each dish on the Health Menu lists its calorie content. A senior official stated that ingredients have been selected carefully to keep carbohydrates and calories low, while boosting fibre, protein, and essential nutrients.
Traditional Meals Still Available
While the menu highlights health-forward options, traditional thalis and curries remain part of the canteen’s offerings to ensure a wide range of choices for all preferences.
