The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), based in Uran, Navi Mumbai, has become the first port in India to surpass 10 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in container handling capacity. This milestone follows recent infrastructure upgrades, bringing the port’s capacity to 10.4 million TEUs across five container terminals.
Handles Over Half of India’s Container Traffic
JNPA currently manages more than half of India’s total container traffic. In 2024, the port processed 7.05 million TEUs. During the first two months of the financial year 2025–26, it handled 15.39 million tonnes of containers and 16.64 million tonnes of overall cargo.

Comparison with Mundra Port
Mundra Port, operated by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd, is the nearest competitor in terms of capacity. It has four terminals and a combined handling capacity of 7.5 million TEUs—significantly lower than JNPA’s upgraded capacity.
Future Expansion at Vadhvan Port
Due to limited space for further expansion at the JNPA site, upcoming capacity additions will be directed to the planned Vadhvan Port, located about 150 km away. This port is expected to support JNPA’s growth as demand for container handling continues to rise.
Boosting Efficiency Through Technology
JNPA is also investing in improving operational efficiency. Efforts include digitalisationautomation, the launch of a centralised parking plaza, and the creation of a dedicated empty container yard to streamline logistics and reduce turnaround times.
