In the financial year 2024–25, Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines together invested ₹9,558 crore in Air India. This large investment was made to help cover the airline’s expenses, daily operations, and future growth plans.

Out of the total, a big part of the money—₹4,306 crore—was added in March 2025 alone. Tata Sons contributed ₹3,224.82 crore and Singapore Airlines added ₹1,080.68 crore that month.

Vistara Merged with Air India

In November 2024, Vistara, a joint venture between Tata and Singapore Airlines, officially merged with Air India. After this, Singapore Airlines received a 25.1% stake in Air India. This move helped strengthen Air India’s position in the Indian aviation market.

How the Investment Was Made

According to regulatory records, the two companies were given new shares in return for their investment. Tata Sons received over 523 crore shares, and Singapore Airlines received more than 175 crore shares. These shares were priced at ₹6.1632 each, including a face value of ₹4 and a small premium.

Before the March investment, Singapore Airlines had already invested ₹5,252.5 crore in Air India earlier in the year.

Financial Performance

Despite the fresh investments, Air India is still facing losses. In the first nine months of 2024 (April to December), the airline reported a loss of ₹8,033.1 crore before special adjustments. During the same time, the airline made ₹56,366.8 crore in revenue.

Recent Tragedy

In addition to financial challenges, Air India is also dealing with a tragic accident. On June 12, a Boeing 787-8 aircraft flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed soon after take-off. The plane hit a medical hostel building in Ahmedabad. The crash resulted in the death of 270 people, including 241 passengers. Only one passenger survived the accident.

Looking Ahead

Air India, now owned by the Tata Group since January 2022, is undergoing a five-year transformation plan. The airline is working to improve its services and operations, and this major investment by its shareholders is expected to support that journey.
