Indian Railways is set for a major expansion under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, with investments exceeding ₹1.53 lakh crore in the financial year 2025–26. The planned projects will cover more than 6,000 kilometres of railway network across the country.

According to the Ministry of Railways, this marks a significant 110% increase compared to the previous financial year. A total of 100 projects, including new lines, doubling, and multi-tracking works, have been approved this year, focusing on better connectivity, inclusive development, and last-mile access.
In comparison, during 2024–25, the ministry sanctioned 64 projects worth around ₹73,000 crore, covering approximately 2,800 kilometres of track.
Officials noted that project approvals in 2025–26 have risen by 56%, while route expansion has increased by 114%, reflecting the scale of infrastructure push.
The sanctioned projects aim to reduce congestion on busy routes, improve train punctuality, and enhance overall passenger experience. They also focus on expanding rail connectivity to underserved and remote regions.
The expansion spans multiple states including Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh, among others, ensuring more balanced and inclusive railway development across India.
