The Ministry of Railways has announced a mission-mode plan to construct underpasses at locations where settlements on one side of the track connect to fields, schools, cremation grounds, or other frequently accessed areas on the opposite side. The initiative aims to prevent accidents and provide a safe crossing for pedestrians and commuters.

Minister Directs Nationwide Construction
On Thursday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw instructed that underpasses be built across the country at sites where large numbers of people regularly cross railway tracks. The minister emphasised that the structures should serve as a lifesaving alternative for daily commuters.
User-Friendly Design for Daily Commuters
The underpasses will be designed to allow easy passage for pedestrians carrying bicycles, motorcycles, or work-related items. The ministry highlighted that this initiative will benefit a significant portion of the population and help reduce accidents at track crossings.
Quick Construction Within 12 Hours
To minimise disruption, the underpasses will be pre-fabricated and installed at the site within just 12 hours. The process involves transporting the ready-made structure, taking a short traffic block, and completing the installation during the 12-hour window, after which the underpass will be ready for use.
Long-Term Plan and Waterlogging Prevention
Vaishnaw instructed officials to resolve this issue nationwide within the next 5–6 years. The designs will also be user-friendly and resistant to waterlogging, ensuring that people feel safe and comfortable using the underpasses at all times.
