Global military power increasingly depends on air superiority, making the size of a country’s fighter jet fleet a key measure of strength. India recently signed its largest-ever deal with France to acquire 114 Rafale jets, but France is far from the world’s largest fighter jet producer. Today, production is dominated by a few nations, with the gap between them widening rapidly. The United States and China together account for the majority of global fighter jet output, while other countries maintain smaller, steady production lines.
1. United States
Lockheed Martin and Boeing drive US fighter jet production, delivering around 190–200 jets annually. The F-35 Lightning II remains the flagship model, reinforcing America’s leading position in the sector.

2. China
China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and AVIC rank second globally, producing about 100 fighter jets per year. Key models include the J-20 and J-35, with the country already unveiling fifth- and sixth-generation aircraft.
3. Russia
Sukhoi and United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) manufacture around 50 jets annually for Russia. Their fleet includes the Su-30, Su-34, Su-35, and Su-57, securing Russia’s position among the top producers.
4. France
Dassault Aviation leads France’s fighter jet production, including Rafale units for the navy, with an annual output of 25–30 jets. Despite India’s Rafale purchases, France’s production remains modest compared with global leaders.
5. European Consortium
European manufacturers such as BAE Systems, Airbus, and Leonardo produce the Eurofighter Typhoon but are limited to roughly 20 jets a year across participating countries.
6. India
India ranks sixth, with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) building Tejas light combat jets. Production averages around 25 jets annually, though deliveries are often delayed due to reliance on imported engines from GE in the US.
