Uber has introduced its bike taxi and parcel delivery services in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, aiming to offer a faster and more affordable alternative for navigating the cities’ growing traffic congestion.

Affordable and App-Based Travel Option
The new service is integrated into Uber’s existing app, allowing users to book bike taxis just like autos or cabs. Fares start at ₹25 for the first three kilometres, making it one of the most budget-friendly commuting options available. The service also extends to suburban areas such as Fort Kochi, Vypeen, Paravur, and Aluva, improving connectivity beyond city centres.
Parcel Delivery Adds Convenience
In addition to passenger transport, Uber has rolled out a bike parcel service that enables residents to send small packages across the city quickly and at a lower cost. This feature is expected to benefit both individuals and small businesses looking for efficient last-mile delivery solutions.
Driver Onboarding and Earnings
To scale operations, Uber is actively enrolling two-wheeler owners onto its platform. The company is offering a ₹1,000 joining bonus and promises potential monthly earnings of up to ₹35,000. Riders are required to carry helmets for passengers, and preference is given to newer vehicles registered after 2012.
Mixed Public Response
Commuters have welcomed the service as a cost-effective option, especially during peak hours when traffic congestion is at its worst. However, users have noted that waiting times for bike taxis are currently higher compared to other ride options.
Resistance from Driver Unions
The rollout has triggered concern among traditional autorickshaw and taxi unions. Representatives argue that the lower pricing of bike taxis creates unfair competition and threatens their income, warning of possible protests against the expansion of such services.
Regulatory Shift Enables Launch
Uber had previously attempted to introduce bike taxis in Kerala in 2017, but the proposal was rejected due to safety concerns. With regulatory conditions now addressed and approvals secured, the company has finally been able to launch the service in the state.
