The launch of bike taxi services by Rapido in Kerala has drawn sharp opposition from auto and taxi drivers’ unions, who claim the service violates existing transport regulations. The backlash intensified following the introduction of a women-only bike taxi service in the state.

Protest in Thiruvananthapuram
Members of the National Online Auto Taxi Drivers Union staged a protest outside the company’s office in Thiruvananthapuram, demanding an immediate halt to the service. The union warned that protests could spread across the state if their concerns are not addressed.
Livelihood Concerns Raised
Driver unions argue that bike taxi services are already affecting the earnings of conventional auto and taxi drivers. They say the new model introduces unfair competition, especially when traditional drivers operate under stricter regulatory frameworks.
Regulatory Violations Alleged
According to the unions, bike taxi operations are not permitted under current rules. They highlighted that the use of white-plate private motorcycles for commercial purposes goes against existing norms, raising questions about legality and enforcement.Gig Workers Union Seeks Clarity
Meanwhile, the Kerala State Gig and Platform Workers Union has approached the transport commissioner, seeking clear assurances that private, white-plate vehicles will not be allowed for commercial ride-hailing services in the state.
