After years of delays and procedural challenges, two major infrastructure initiatives in the state capital, the Peroorkada flyover and the Vattiyoorkavu road and junction development, have finally entered the implementation stage.

Peroorkada Flyover Contract Awarded
The Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK) has awarded the contract for the Peroorkada flyover to Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd. The formal agreement is expected to be signed soon. This comes after demolition work along the Ambalamukku to Peroorkada Junction alignment, a crucial preparatory step, reached 95 percent completion. Officials have confirmed that construction will begin immediately once contractual formalities are finalized.
Vattiyoorkavu Road and Junction Development Begins
Preliminary construction work for the Vattiyoorkavu road and junction upgrade has also commenced. The Kerala Road Fund Board, serving as the implementing agency, awarded the contract to the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society. This marks a significant milestone for a project that has faced long-standing delays.
Improving Connectivity and Traffic Flow
Both projects aim to reduce congestion and enhance connectivity along key arterial routes linking Sasthamangalam, Mannarakonam, Vattiyoorkavu, Peroorkada, and Vazhayila. The Vattiyoorkavu project involves widening the existing road, redesigning junctions, adding footpaths, upgrading drainage systems, and installing modern street lighting. The upgrades are designed to improve vehicular flow and ensure pedestrian safety.
Officials Highlight Benefits
Vattiyoorkavu MLA V K Prasanth emphasized the significance of the projects: “These are not just routine roadworks; they are lifelines for thousands of daily commuters. With tenders floated and land issues largely resolved, we are moving from planning to execution. The Peroorkada flyover and Vattiyoorkavu junction development will transform traffic flow and connectivity, benefiting residents, businesses, and commuters alike.”
Timeline and Costs
Both projects are scheduled to begin construction by the end of March. The Peroorkada flyover is expected to be completed within approximately 18 months of commencement. Once finished, the interventions are projected to ease congestion at major choke points, particularly the Peroorkada junction where four critical routes converge, and improve overall travel times toward the city centre. The Vattiyoorkavu project is estimated at ₹531.76 crore, while the Peroorkada flyover will cost ₹106.7 crore.
