The city corporation has opened 50 new kennels at the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre in Vellalore, built at a cost of ₹4.13 crore. The facility will help manage the stray dog population more effectively and provide space for post-operative care, quarantine, and recovery after sterilization and vaccination.

Expanded Facilities and Operations

An additional operation theatre and four dog transport vehicles were also inaugurated, bringing the total to five operation theatres at the centre. Each theatre can handle at least 10 surgeries a day, boosting sterilization capacity for dogs from across the city.

Supporting Ongoing ABC Efforts

The kennels, spread over more than an acre, can house 10 dogs each. They support the ABC programme by offering safe spaces for recovery and care. The corporation currently runs three other ABC centres at Seernaickenpalayam, Ukkadam Pullukadu, and Ondipudur, with a fourth under construction at Vellakinar for the north zone.

Focus on Public Safety

This initiative is part of the city’s broader efforts to reduce dog bites and rabies through systematic sterilization and vaccination, coordinated with veterinarians, animal welfare groups, and field staff to ensure proper care of stray dogs.
