US President Donald Trump has said that the India-US trade deal is moving forward as planned and that relations between the two countries are “fantastic,” according to statements reported during a recent visit and public engagements. Trump emphasised the strength of the economic and strategic partnership between India and the United States, noting the ongoing discussions around broader trade cooperation and investment opportunities.

india us trade deal trump tariff update

India has agreed to reduce tariffs on the majority of items as part of the interim trade deal in return for the US lowering reciprocal tariffs to 18%, with sector-specific tariffs on iron and steel, copper and aluminum and auto and auto parts staying at 50%. The government did not comment, with officials saying it was too early to gauge the ruling’s impact.

Trump’s remarks highlighted the positive trajectory of bilateral ties, which span defence, energy, technology and trade cooperation. He reiterated his support for deepening economic linkages, expressing confidence that a mutually beneficial trade agreement would bolster jobs and growth on both sides. Trump’s comments have been interpreted as underscoring the importance the US places on closer collaboration with India in globally significant sectors and markets.

Observers say that advancing trade talks could help reduce tariff barriers, improve market access for goods and services, and create an enabling environment for expanded bilateral commerce. Both governments have previously expressed interest in negotiating frameworks that address trade imbalances and enhance cooperation in critical industries such as technology, clean energy and agriculture.

The positive tone set by Trump’s remarks comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between India and the US, reflecting a shared interest in strengthening economic ties and navigating global economic challenges together.
