India’s passport has seen a global improvement, rising to the 75th position in the latest Henley Passport Index, up from 85th last year. The index ranks passports based on the number of destinations their holders can visit without a prior visa. Indian travellers now enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 56 countries, reflecting better international mobility.

This higher ranking means Indian citizens can travel more easily for holidays, business, and cultural exchanges. Many countries across Asia, the Caribbean, Africa, and Oceania are now offering simpler entry options for Indian passport holders.
India’s passport ranking has fluctuated over the past decade. It reached a peak of 71st in 2006, fell to 85th last year, and has now recovered to 75th. While this is not the country’s highest-ever position, it shows steady progress and signals a positive trend for smoother global travel for Indian citizens.
Indian travellers can now access a wide range of countries through visa-free entry, visas on arrival, or e-visas. Some of the visa-free destinations include Bhutan, Barbados, and Grenada. Countries offering visas on arrival include Cambodia, Maldives, and Madagascar. E-visa options are available for destinations like Bangladesh, Oman, and Vietnam.
Overall, the improvement highlights India’s gradual rise in global travel access, making it easier for its citizens to explore, work, and connect internationally.
