Dr. Roy C.J., widely known as CJ Roy, founder and chairman of Confident Group, was found dead at his office in central Bengaluru on Friday. Police said the case appears to be a suicide, based on preliminary findings.

The incident occurred at the company’s premises near Richmond Circle. Sources familiar with the investigation said Roy suffered a gunshot injury inside the office. Police have launched a detailed probe and said further information will be shared after forensic and procedural formalities are completed.
Who Was CJ Roy
Dr. Roy C.J. was a Keralite who grew up in Bengaluru and went on to build one of the country’s prominent privately held real estate groups. He held a PhD, studied in France and Switzerland, and began his professional career at Hewlett-Packard.
He founded Confident Group in 2006, shortly after the dot-com bust. Over the years, the company expanded across Bengaluru, Kochi, other Indian cities, and parts of the Middle East. According to information published on the group’s website, Confident Group delivered more than 165 projects spanning over 43 million square feet and served over 15,000 customers. The company has often described itself as debt-free.
Beyond real estate, Roy diversified the group’s presence into hospitality, infrastructure, and entertainment. He was also known in the public sphere for sponsoring popular television shows, including Idea Star Singer.
Philanthropy and Public Service
Roy was actively involved in charitable initiatives. These included rebuilding 100 homes in Kerala following severe floods and funding heart surgeries for underprivileged patients. His philanthropic work earned him recognition beyond business circles.
He also served as the Honorary Consul for the Slovak Republic in Karnataka and Kerala.
Net Worth and Lifestyle
As Confident Group is a private company, official details of Roy’s net worth were not disclosed. However, multiple reports have estimated his net worth at over $1 billion.
Roy was known as a luxury automobile enthusiast, with a collection reportedly including Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and Bugatti models in India and Dubai. Media reports said he had recently acquired his 12th Rolls-Royce, a Phantom VIII, in November last year.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and urged restraint until all facts are verified.
