Arijit Singh has announced that he is stepping away from playback singing, surprising fans worldwide. In a message posted on his social media on January 27, 2026, Singh called it off, describing his journey as “wonderful” and thanking listeners for their support over the years.
The 38-year-old singer clarified that while he won’t take on any new playback assignments, he will continue creating music independently and complete existing commitments, meaning fans may still hear new releases from him this year. Singh said he plans to explore music on his own as a “small little artist,” emphasizing that he is not quitting music entirely.

Singh’s career has been extraordinary. He first gained attention as a contestant on “Fame Gurukul” in 2005 and made his playback debut in 2011 with “Phir Mohabbat” from Murder 2. His breakthrough came with “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2 in 2013, which established him as one of Bollywood’s most in-demand voices.
Since then, he has delivered countless hits, including “Channa Mereya,” “Agar Tum Saath Ho,” “Raabta,” “Kesariya,” “Gerua,” “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” and “Chaleya,” lending his voice to top actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh.
Singh has sung in multiple Indian languages—Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi—and collaborated with leading composers and filmmakers. His talent has earned him numerous Filmfare Awards, including several for Best Male Playback Singer.
In July 2025, Singh surpassed global stars Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran to become the most followed artist on Spotify, with 151 million followers. While he did not explain his reasons for stepping back, his announcement sparked shock and disbelief among fans online.
