Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and this year’s chief guest at India’s 77th Republic Day, drew attention on Monday in a maroon-and-gold brocade bandhgala jacket paired with off-white trousers—a striking blend of elegance and traditional Indian style that suited the grandeur of the occasion.

Typically known for her tailored pantsuits at international events, von der Leyen’s choice of traditional Indian attire for the parade marked a notable departure, showcasing her respect for Indian culture and a thoughtful nod to the importance of the celebration.
As she watched the parade featuring India’s armed forces, cultural tableaux, and aerial flypasts, her outfit seemed to mirror the pride, heritage, and vibrant spirit of the nation on its 77th Republic Day.
Arriving at Kartavya Path in a traditional horse-drawn buggy with President Droupadi Murmu and European Council President António Lus Santos da Costa, von der Leyen shared on X, “It is the honour of a lifetime to be Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations. A successful India makes the world more stable, prosperous, and secure. And we all benefit.”
The ceremonial buggy procession, escorted by the President’s Bodyguard (Rashtrapati ke Angrakshak), marked the formal start of one of India’s most enduring and celebrated traditions.
Von der Leyen became the first woman to hold the European Commission presidency in 2019 and was re-elected for a second term in July 2024, set to lead until the European elections in 2029. Before heading the Commission, she served in Germany’s federal government from 2005 to 2019, managing key portfolios including Family and Youth, Labour, and Defence, building extensive governance experience.
Her four-day visit to India precedes the 16th India-EU Summit later this week and is seen as an important step in strengthening political, economic, and strategic ties between New Delhi and Brussels.
