Kerala is set to strengthen its maritime and industrial capabilities with the proposed establishment of a shipbuilding yard at Ponnani Port under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The project, currently in the planning stage, aims to attract private investors to develop modern infrastructure for shipbuilding, ship repair, and allied marine engineering activities, with support and facilitation from the state government.

Located in Malappuram district, Ponnani Port is strategically positioned along India’s west coast, making it suitable for maritime manufacturing and repair services. The proposed shipyard is expected to cater to a wide range of vessels, including fishing boats, coastal vessels, barges, and small-to-medium commercial ships. Over time, the facility could also support defence-related and specialised marine projects, depending on capacity expansion.
The state government sees the project as a key component of its port-led development strategy. Once operational, the shipbuilding yard is projected to generate significant direct and indirect employment, benefiting skilled and semi-skilled workers, engineers, technicians, and local youth. Ancillary industries such as steel fabrication, equipment supply, logistics, and marine services are also expected to grow around the port.
Officials say the PPP model will help reduce the financial burden on the government while ensuring efficient project execution through private sector expertise. The development of the shipyard is also expected to boost economic activity in the region, improve utilisation of Ponnani Port, and contribute to Kerala’s long-term goal of emerging as a competitive maritime and logistics hub on the western seaboard.
