US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor has underscored the critical role India plays in US foreign policy, announcing that Washington and New Delhi will resume their next round of trade negotiations starting Tuesday, January 12. Gor, who also serves as Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, indicated that US President Donald Trump may visit India next year.

Speaking at the US Embassy in Delhi, Gor described the relationship between the two nations as “anchored at the highest levels,” emphasizing that real friends can resolve differences. He highlighted Trump’s strong personal friendship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it genuine and consistent.
Strategic and Economic Ties
Gor noted that while trade is a key focus, India and the US continue to cooperate across security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health. “No partner is more essential than India,” he said, stressing that his goal as ambassador is to pursue an ambitious agenda that strengthens the strategic partnership between the world’s oldest and largest democracies.
Regarding the ongoing trade deal negotiations, Gor acknowledged the complexity of the discussions, noting that India’s size makes progress challenging but reaffirming the US commitment to finalizing the agreement. The next round of trade talks is scheduled to begin immediately.
Trump’s India Visit
Gor suggested that President Trump may visit India within the next year or two. He recalled past interactions with the US leader, noting the personal rapport between Trump and Modi and highlighting their frequent direct communications.
Pax Silica Alliance
Gor also announced that India will soon become a member of the Pax Silica alliance, a US-led initiative focused on building a secure, resilient, and innovation-driven global silicon supply chain. India is set to join as a full member next month, reinforcing its strategic and technological partnership with the US.
