Indian Railways is set to revolutionize travel with the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR), India’s first bullet train system. Years of planning, engineering, and construction have gone into this project, and the official launch is scheduled for August 15, 2027, aligning with the country’s Independence Day celebrations.
Faster Travel Between Mumbai and Ahmedabad
The corridor will connect Mumbai in Maharashtra with Ahmedabad in Gujarat, covering 508 kilometres in under three hours. Currently, the same journey by conventional trains takes 7–8 hours, making the bullet train a major time-saver. The corridor is being built to international high-speed rail standards and features a 21-kilometre underground tunnel and a 7-kilometre undersea section beneath Thane Creek, showcasing significant civil engineering achievements.

Collaboration With Japan
The project is developed in collaboration with Japan, using Shinkansen E5 series trains designed for high-speed travel. These trains will operate at speeds of up to 320 km/h, drastically reducing travel time and ensuring reliability.
Stations Along the Corridor
The MAHSR will include 12 stations:
- Maharashtra: Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Thane, Virar, Boisar
- Gujarat: Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, Sabarmati
Bullet trains are expected to run every 15–20 minutes, providing a high-frequency service for commuters and travelers.
Economic Impact and Future Prospects
The bullet train project is more than just a transportation upgrade—it is expected to boost regional economies, improve connectivity, and create new business opportunities along the corridor. Full operational capability is planned by 2029, making this project a landmark in India’s railway infrastructure by combining international technology with domestic execution.
