Despite relatively small volumes, the Nasdaq-listed Vietnamese automaker VinFast has made a notable impact in India’s electric vehicle (EV) market. In December 2025, VinFast overtook South Korean brands Hyundai and Kia to become the country’s fourth-largest EV maker.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles remains India’s top-selling EV brand, with 5,231 registrations in December, according to VAHAN data as of December 29, 2025. Tata offers six electric models in its lineup.
JSW MG Motor India, backed by SAIC, came second with 3,054 registrations, while Mahindra & Mahindra sold around 2,600 EVs in the same month.
VinFast, which entered India in 2025 with its VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs, recorded 321 registrations in December. By comparison, Hyundai Motor India’s Creta EV saw 238 registrations, and Kia India’s Carens Clavis EV registered 272 units. The VinFast SUVs are assembled at the company’s Thoothukudi plant in Tamil Nadu, and the automaker has rapidly expanded its presence with 35 showrooms in just four months.
Tesla’s entry has impacted premium and luxury EV sales, with 62 units sold in December. Chinese automaker BYD registered 212 EVs, down from 300 in December 2024. Mercedes-Benz India saw a sharp drop to 53 registrations, while BMW doubled its December sales to 300 units.
For the full year 2025, Tata Motors recorded 68,558 EV registrations, up 12% from 2024. JSW MG Motor India more than doubled its volumes to 50,853 units, thanks to the Windsor EV, which became the country’s best-selling electric car. Mahindra & Mahindra’s EV sales also surged, increasing from 7,135 units in 2024 to 33,008 units in 2025.
