Android users across India now have access to Google’s Emergency Location Service (ELS), a feature designed to significantly reduce emergency response times. ELS enables local emergency responders to pinpoint a caller’s exact location, even in areas where traditional GPS may be less effective.

How ELS Works During Emergencies
When a user dials an emergency number, such as 112, ELS automatically activates and sends the device’s precise location directly to responders. The service leverages a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi, mobile networks, and on-device sensors to work effectively indoors and in densely populated urban areas. Unlike standard location-sharing tools, ELS is built into the Android operating system and only activates during an emergency call.
Accuracy and Privacy
Traditional emergency location methods, like cell tower triangulation, can have errors spanning several kilometers. ELS reduces this margin to just a few meters. Google ensures user privacy by processing the location on the device itself, sending the data straight to emergency services without routing it through Google servers.
Enabling ELS on Your Device
Most modern Android phones (Android 4.4 and above) have ELS enabled by default, but users are encouraged to check their settings:
- Open Settings on the smartphone.
- Go to Safety & Emergency (or Location > Advanced on some devices).
- Ensure Emergency Location Service is toggled On.
- Fill in Medical Information and Emergency Contacts, which first responders can access even if the phone is locked.
Benefits for Indian Users
- 112 Integration: Fully compatible with India’s all-in-one emergency helpline.
- Low Power Consumption: Activates only during calls, conserving battery life.
- No Data Required: Location can be sent via Data SMS or the internet, ensuring reach even in low-signal areas.
Important Notes
Cybersecurity experts recommend users still be ready to verbally describe their location when possible. ELS relies on the latest version of Google Play Services to function properly. Currently, the feature is active in Uttar Pradesh and will expand to additional regions soon. Devices running Android 6.0 and above can use this service.
