The long-awaited transformation of the Nethravati riverbank in Mangaluru is set to welcome the public soon, with Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) preparing to open the first phase of its waterfront development project later this month.

Initial Stretch Ready for Inauguration
After nearly five years of construction, the first 450-metre section of the promenade is ready for inauguration, according to the Times of India. The broader project spans 2.1 km from the Nethravati bridge and was initially proposed in a 2020 DPR. MSCL’s general manager (technical), Arun Prabha KS, confirmed that construction has made significant progress along the full stretch.
Tourism and Recreation Focus
“The main aim of the Nethravati riverfront project is to make the riverbank an attractive tourist spot with all facilities for recreation. We have developed the area by preserving nature and planting more saplings,” Arun Prabha said. Only 300 metres of hardscaping remain incomplete, while the opening phase between the Nethravati railway bridge and Morgan Gate now features full softscaping, including landscaping and walkways.
Public Amenities on the Waterfront
The 450-metre section includes a variety of amenities for visitors: a riverside birdwatching zone, open-air theatre, laterite-and-brick walkway, children’s play area, open-air gym, art space, and a tree house. Plans are also in motion to introduce boating and water sports through a designated operator.
Connectivity and Cost Updates
MSCL plans to inaugurate the promenade alongside the nearly completed railway underbridge at Mahakalipadpu, enhancing both connectivity and leisure facilities in the area. Initially allocated Rs 70 crore, the project’s cost has been revised to Rs 32 crore for the full 2.1 km stretch, with approximately Rs 16 crore already spent.
