Indo-Russian ties are set for a boost this week as President Vladimir Putin visits India for a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 4-5. The meeting is expected to strengthen their “privileged strategic partnership,” with possible cooperation on India’s Sudarshan Chakra, or “Indian iron dome.”

The partnership proved its strength during Operation Sindoor, where Russian technology, from missiles and air defense systems to fighter jets and electronic warfare, played a critical role in India’s battlefield success. India is looking to acquire more S-400 surface-to-air missiles from Russia, which proved highly effective during the operation.
Dr VK Saraswat, missile scientist and NITI Aayog member, highlighted the long history of India-Russia defense collaboration, recalling Russian-supplied SAM-2 missiles and MiG fighter jets from the 1970s, along with T-90 tanks. Over time, the relationship evolved from simple buyer-seller dynamics into a full technology partnership, culminating in projects like the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. BrahMos demonstrated exceptional precision in Operation Sindoor, highlighting the strength of Indo-Russian cooperation.
The S-400 air defense system also proved decisive, countering enemy missiles and drones and maintaining secure skies. Russian-origin Sukhoi fighter jets, produced under license in India, played key offensive roles.
The partnership extends beyond defense into nuclear energy, space, and submarine technology, with Russian reactors powering India’s civilian nuclear program, satellite launches enabled by joint space efforts, and collaboration on submarines bolstering maritime security.
Private industry collaboration is also growing, with Indian companies increasingly working with Russian counterparts on critical defense technologies. Despite global uncertainties, India continues to rely on Russia as a dependable partner.
Operation Sindoor underscores not only tactical success but the enduring Indo-Russian friendship, which remains strong across missiles, reactors, and strategic technologies.
