Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has built a whole lineup of Tejas fighters over the years. Some are already in service, others are being refined, and a few are aimed at export customers who want a lighter and more affordable jet. Here is a straightforward guide to every major version.

Tejas Mark 1
This is the first combat ready model that joined the Indian Air Force in 2015. It runs on the GE F404 IN20 engine and uses a clean delta wing layout. The Mark 1 stepped in to replace older fighters like the MiG 21 and became the foundation for everything that followed.

Tejas Trainer
This two seat version comes from the Mark 1. It is built for pilot training and conversion. Both seats have full controls, and most systems are the same as the single seat aircraft, making the switch between training and frontline flying smooth for pilots.

Tejas Mark 1A
This is an upgraded step forward. It adds an advanced AESA radar, better avionics, aerial refuelling and more Indian built systems. The Mark 1A offers stronger combat performance and is the main production line for the Air Force going ahead.

Tejas Mark 2
This is the next big leap and is still under development. It will use a stronger GE F414 engine, carry more weapons and fly farther. Its structure will be refined with features like canards. The idea is to move Tejas into a true medium weight role.

Tejas Naval Variant
This version is adjusted for aircraft carrier operations. It has reinforced landing gear, an arrestor hook and structural changes to handle deck landings. It is based on the Mark 1 and Mark 1A design but is meant for naval use.

Tejas Export or Lead in Fighter Trainer Concept
This proposed model mixes trainer features with light combat capability. The idea is simple. Give new or smaller air forces an affordable jet that can train pilots and also carry out real missions when needed.
