Qatar moved a step closer to next generation urban travel by completing a fully autonomous eVTOL air taxi trial. The Ministry of Transport led the effort under the guidance of HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla bin Mohammed Al Thani. The test showed how artificial intelligence can support safe and efficient air travel inside crowded cities while keeping environmental goals in mind.

A Successful Trial Flight Over Doha
The Ministry carried out the country’s first urban flight using an unmanned aircraft that flew between Old Doha Port and Katara Cultural Village. The journey was fully controlled by artificial intelligence with no human assistance. The aircraft managed its route, altitude and airspace use on its own, and completed the test within a safe operating environment. This trial is one of several evaluations that will shape how autonomous air taxis might work in a real city setting.
Planning for Safety and Regulation
The project will move forward in a series of carefully guided stages. Each stage will look at technical needs, operational requirements and regulatory approvals. This includes checking whether current infrastructure can support autonomous flights, confirming that all systems meet national standards and ensuring that safety and security rules remain strict. The results from the trial will help the Ministry build a clear framework that matches international guidelines.
Part of a Larger National Vision
HE Minister Sheikh Mohammed called the trial an important moment in Qatar’s journey toward a smarter transport system. The project supports the goals of the Ministry of Transport Strategy for the period from 2025 to 2030. Those goals include improving the reliability of public transport, creating better links between travel modes and cutting carbon emissions. It also fits into the wider plans under the National Development Strategy Three and Qatar National Vision 2030, both of which aim to raise the quality of life through innovation and sustainability.
What This Means for Future Mobility
The Ministry sees this successful test as the start of a long term shift in how people move around the country. Work will continue with global partners to build the infrastructure needed for advanced air mobility. The pilotless air taxi is expected to become a fast, clean and safe option for short city trips. It can ease road congestion, offer a new choice for daily travel and strengthen Qatar’s position as a leader in modern transport technology.
