OpenAI is giving its Indian users a major boost by making the ChatGPT Go plan free for one year starting November 4. The offer, now live on the web and Android, gives access to the latest GPT 5 model with faster responses, longer chats, file uploads, and image generation, all at no cost. iOS users will get the update soon.

ChatGPT Go usually costs about 400 rupees per month and sits between the free and Pro versions. It allows users to create images, analyze documents, and enjoy ten times higher usage limits. It also remembers previous conversations, making interactions feel more personal and useful over time.

India takes center stage in OpenAI’s plans

The move highlights how important India has become for OpenAI, now its second largest user base after the United States. Millions across the country use ChatGPT for studies, startups, coding, and creative work. By offering a free plan, OpenAI hopes to make advanced AI tools accessible to more people and support the government’s IndiaAI Mission, which aims to build digital literacy and innovation in every region.

OpenAI also confirmed that existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India have already been upgraded automatically to the free plan. They will not need to reapply or cancel anything since the benefits are active for a full year. After that, regular pricing will return.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said the decision is about inclusion and impact. He said ahead of OpenAI’s first DevDay Exchange event in India that the goal is to make ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people explore what is possible with AI.

How to get it

Users can simply log in or sign up on the ChatGPT website or app, where the Go plan will be activated automatically if they are eligible.

This launch comes as global AI competition intensifies in India. Earlier this year, Perplexity AI offered Airtel customers free access to its premium plan. With OpenAI now following suit, India is quickly becoming one of the world’s biggest testing grounds for everyday AI use and one of the fastest growing hubs for AI driven innovation.
