The Indian Railways is set to expand the popular Vande Bharat Express network once again, adding four new routes that will strengthen inter-state connectivity and passenger convenience. With these additions, the total number of Vande Bharat services will rise to 164, reflecting the continued success and demand for India’s semi-high-speed train network.
New Routes Strengthening Key Corridors
The newly approved trains will connect:
- Bengaluru (KSR) to Ernakulam, improving travel between Karnataka and Kerala.
- Firozpur Cantt to Delhi, linking Punjab to the national capital.
- Varanasi to Khajuraho, enhancing connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
- Lucknow to Saharanpur, creating a faster route within Uttar Pradesh and towards the northwest.

A senior railway official confirmed to The Indian Express that the four new trains have been officially approved, with schedules to be announced soon.
Upgraded Travel Experience
Each of the new trains will feature the latest Vande Bharat upgrades, designed for speed, safety, and comfort. They come equipped with the KAVACH automatic train protection system, improved air-conditioning with UV-C disinfection, semi-permanent couplers for smoother rides, and automatic plug doors that create wider, noise-free interiors.
Safety has also been enhanced with CCTVs in all coaches, advanced fire-protection systems, and emergency communication units. Accessibility remains a priority, with special lavatories for differently-abled passengers in driving coaches.
Why It Matters
The strong passenger response to existing Vande Bharat trains underlines their success. In the financial year 2024–25, occupancy rates hit 102%, and in 2025–26 (up to June), they’ve already reached 105%.
These new routes are expected to:
- Cut travel time between major cities.
- Offer a smoother and more secure ride with advanced onboard systems.
- Strengthen regional and inter-state connectivity, especially in underserved corridors.
Demonstrate operational success, proving that faster, comfortable rail travel is reshaping passenger preferences.
