The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Ikshak, an indigenously built Survey Vessel (Large), at Naval Base Kochi on November 6, 2025. The ceremony will be led by Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, marking the ship’s formal induction into active service.

A Milestone in Indigenous Naval Shipbuilding
Ikshak is the third vessel in its class, reinforcing the Navy’s commitment to self-reliance and technological advancement under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The induction of Ikshak highlights India’s growing capability in designing and constructing advanced hydrographic survey platforms that enhance maritime mapping, navigation, and safety.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, Kolkata, under the supervision of the Directorate of Ship Production and the Warship Overseeing Team (Kolkata), Ikshak incorporates over 80% indigenous components. The project showcases a successful partnership between GRSE and Indian MSMEs, reflecting the country’s evolving industrial ecosystem in defence manufacturing.
Designed for Dual Roles
While Ikshak’s primary mission is hydrographic survey operations, the ship has been equipped with dual-role capability. It can serve as a Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) vessel and operate as a hospital ship during emergencies, extending critical support in times of crisis.
A Step Towards Inclusivity
In a significant first, Ikshak is the first Survey Vessel (Large) designed with dedicated accommodation for women officers and sailors. This inclusion marks a progressive shift within the Indian Navy, reflecting its commitment to building a future-ready and gender-inclusive fleet.
The Meaning Behind ‘Ikshak’
The name Ikshak, meaning “The Guide”, symbolizes the ship’s purpose — to chart the unknown seas, ensure safe navigation for mariners, and strengthen India’s maritime presence. With this commissioning, the Indian Navy continues to expand its capabilities while staying anchored in indigenous innovation and national pride.
