Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s strong ties with ASEAN during the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit, held virtually from Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, October 26, 2025. Despite what he called an “era of uncertainties,” Modi said the India-ASEAN strategic partnership continues to thrive and is emerging as a foundation for global stability and development.

Strengthening Maritime and Strategic Cooperation
Addressing the summit virtually, Modi announced that 2026 will be observed as the ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation, underscoring India’s commitment to deepen collaboration in ocean security and the blue economy. He highlighted India’s role in humanitarian and disaster relief efforts across Southeast Asia and its partnership with ASEAN nations in advancing food security, digital inclusion, and resilient supply chains.
Shared Heritage and Global Vision
Calling ASEAN a “cultural partner,” Modi said India and the ten-member bloc together represent nearly one-fourth of the world’s population and are linked by “historical ties and shared values.” He described the 21st century as “the century of India and ASEAN,” emphasizing that both sides are companions in the Global South.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who co-chaired the summit, echoed this sentiment, saying the relationship was built on “friendship, trust, and shared interests.”
Expanding Economic and Developmental Ties
The two leaders discussed the ongoing work to finalize the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) and the implementation of the ASEAN-India Plan of Action 2026–2030. The plan aims to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, education, food security, and technology. Modi said the trade agreement could “unleash the full economic potential” of the India-ASEAN relationship.
Anwar Ibrahim also praised the close cooperation between India and ASEAN in education, economy, and culture.
Cultural Bonds and Condolences
Modi noted the deep cultural and people-to-people connections between India and ASEAN, highlighting cooperation in education, tourism, science and technology, health, green energy, and cybersecurity. He also offered condolences to the Royal Family and the people of Thailand following the passing of the Queen Mother.
India’s Broader ASEAN Engagement
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is leading the Indian delegation at Kuala Lumpur and will also represent India at the East Asia Summit on Monday, October 27. India’s engagement with ASEAN nations has been a diplomatic priority this year, marked by high-level visits from leaders including Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, and Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
