Ola Electric unveiled its first non-vehicle product, Shakti, at 10:00 am on 16 October, marking the company’s entry into the energy storage segment. The launch represents a strategic shift for the EV maker, which has so far concentrated on electric two-wheelers.
Prior to the reveal, online speculation ran high, with some guessing the product could be a smart speaker similar to Apple’s HomePod.
Bhavish Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Ola Electric, introduced Shakti as an in-house developed, app-controlled energy storage device. Described as portable and intelligent, the product is designed for multiple purposes including power backup, solar storage, voltage stabilization, and mobile energy needs. Aggarwal said, “It is a single product for power backup, solar storage, for voltage stabilisation and for localised portability.”
Aggarwal also outlined the company’s ambition to build a vertically integrated energy storage ecosystem, covering domestic battery deployment and supply chain management. “Ola Electric will not only deploy batteries in India but also build the supply chain from the ground up,” he said. With this move, Ola enters India’s ₹1 lakh crore Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) market.
The product teaser highlighted the Hindi term “Shakti (energy).” Shakti uses a Li-Ion NMC battery built on Ola’s existing 4,680 Cell Technology and will come in three capacities: 1.5kWh, 5.2kWh, and 9.1kWh. Pricing starts at ₹39,999 for the smallest variant, ₹1,49,999 for the 5.2kWh variant, and ₹1,99,999 for the 9.1kWh model.
Social Media Buzz
The launch generated excitement on social media. One user wrote, “@bhash launches Ola Shakti, a battery in three different variants to power domestic and commercial use including charging scooters.” Another commented, “Ola Shakti sounds super impressive! If the price is right it will be a game changer.”
Other reactions included: “Ola Electric redefining energy storage with Ola Shakti! Innovation, Innovation and Innovation!” and “Wow! No need to change the wiring for the inverter — that’s really a great invention.”
Originally slated for 17 October to coincide with Diwali, the launch was brought forward. A teaser shared by Aggarwal on 14 October highlighted the product’s focus on personal energy technology: “Power has always been a utility, but now it becomes Deep Tech—intelligent, portable, and personal.”
