Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking the launch of Mumbai’s second major airport. The project, which will eventually include four terminals, opened its first terminal for operations.
Tribute to D.B. Patil
Before the formal ceremony, Modi toured the airport complex. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the airport will be named after D.B. Patil, who played a key role in Navi Mumbai’s development. He called the launch a major milestone in the growth of Maharashtra and Mumbai.
Domestic Flights to Begin Soon
Officials said domestic operations will begin shortly, followed by international services in December. Spread across 1,160 hectares, the airport has been designed to handle 20 million passengers annually in the first phase and up to 90 million when fully operational.
Adani Group’s Major Investment
The Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited (NMIAL) is jointly owned by the Adani Group, holding 74%, and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), with 26%. The Adani Group has so far invested around ₹20,000 crore in the project. Airlines including Akasa, IndiGo, and Air India Express have already signed agreements to start services.
Built to Global Standards
The airport is being developed on the model of Dubai International Airport. Once complete, it will feature four terminals, two parallel runways, and one of Asia’s largest Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. Advanced systems for luggage clearance and security will enhance passenger convenience.
Next Phase Underway
Adani Group plans to invest another ₹30,000 crore for the next stage of expansion, raising funds through loans and equity. Construction for the second phase will begin in December, with the entire project expected to be completed by 2029.
Seamless Global Travel Hub
When fully operational, NMIA will serve as a major aviation hub with modern amenities, enabling quick aircraft transfers through ramp-to-ramp movement and offering a smooth experience for both domestic and international passengers.
