Scientists at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Prayagraj, have developed a new antenna system designed to reduce network issues for passengers on fast-moving trains and vehicles. The project was led by Vinay Kumar, Prof V S Tripathi, and Anand Sharma from the institute’s Electronics and Communication Engineering Department (ECED).

Tackling Signal Disruptions

The antenna specifically addresses signal disruptions caused by high speed and frequent changes between cell towers, which commonly affect passengers on trains. A prototype has already been developed and successfully tested, according to Prof Tripathi.

Integration with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)

To further enhance performance, researchers are developing a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), expected to be completed within two years. RIS is a programmable metasurface that dynamically controls electromagnetic waves—adjusting amplitude and direction in real time. Acting like a smart mirror, it will redirect signals from the antenna directly to users, minimizing signal loss and ensuring stronger, uninterrupted mobile connectivity.

Funding and Recognition

The Uttar Pradesh Council of Science and Technology (UPCST) has sanctioned a grant of Rs 14.5 lakh for the project. Research findings have been published in the international journal Physica Scripta.

Impact on Future Networks

This innovation is expected to be highly effective for both 5G and upcoming 6G networks. Once commercialized, it could bring significant relief to millions of commuters struggling with weak or disrupted mobile signals during travel. This project marks a step forward in improving mobile connectivity on the move, combining advanced antenna design with smart surface technology to address one of the most persistent challenges for travelers.
