The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is rolling out a new initiative to make highway travel safer and more transparent. QR Code Sign Boards will soon appear across major highway stretches, giving drivers instant access to key information about the roads they’re on.
This move is part of NHAI’s broader ‘Ease of Commuting’ goal and fits into the government’s push for smarter, technology-driven infrastructure.
What the QR Boards Offer
The new sign boards feature vertical QR codes that can be scanned with any smartphone. A quick scan gives commuters real-time details about the highway section they’re on, including:
- National Highway number and chainage (location markers)
- Project length and construction or maintenance timelines
- Contact numbers for:
- Highway Patrol
- Toll Manager
- Project Manager
- Resident Engineer
- Emergency Helpline 1033
- NHAI Field Office
- Highway Patrol
Beyond basic project data, the boards also help travelers locate nearby facilities such as:
- Hospitals, fuel stations, and restrooms
- Police stations, restaurants, and repair shops
- Truck lay-byes, puncture repair outlets, and EV charging stations
- Distance to the next toll plaza
By scanning a single code, drivers can access everything from emergency help to route details, making highway travel more secure and convenient.
Where the Boards Will Be Placed
To ensure they’re easy to find, QR boards will be installed at:
- Toll plazas and truck lay-byes
- Wayside amenities and rest areas
- Starting and ending points of highways
- Major signboards along the route
This placement helps drivers stay aware of their surroundings and access help quickly when needed.
Improving Road Safety and Communication
Accidents and breakdowns often turn critical because of slow response times or lack of contact information. With the new QR boards:
- Drivers can instantly reach highway patrol teams or engineers.
- The 1033 helpline is built right into the system for faster emergency response.
- Information on nearby hospitals and police stations ensures quicker assistance.
A Step Toward Smarter Roads
By combining simple technology with essential public services, NHAI’s QR code initiative bridges an important gap in highway management. It improves transparency, supports emergency preparedness, and adds a layer of safety and convenience for every road user.
