India is exploring the purchase of additional S-400 surface-to-air missile systems from Russia after the weapons demonstrated strong effectiveness during Operation Sindoor, according to sources familiar with the matter.

India S-400 missile purchase

The potential acquisition could be discussed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India in December, building on the 2018 agreement under which India signed a $5 billion deal for five S-400 units. Despite warnings from the US about possible sanctions under CAATSA (Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act), India received three squadrons of the system so far.

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, India’s Chief of Air Staff, did not provide a direct answer when asked about plans for further purchases. He acknowledged the system’s performance, noting there is no strict limit on how many units the country could acquire, but declined to confirm specific numbers or timelines.

“The system has proved effective. We also have domestic systems in development, so decisions on additional procurements will be made accordingly,” he said.

In addition to the S-400, India is reportedly considering procuring the more advanced S-500 missile system to further enhance its air defense capabilities.
