From the golden dunes of Abu Dhabi to the dramatic peaks of the Hajar Mountains, riding the Etihad Rail promises passengers a remarkable journey. Azza Al Suwaidi, Deputy CEO at Etihad Rail Mobility, described her experience during a test run, calling it “a very lovely experience” with smooth travel through desert landscapes and mountainous regions.

A Relaxed and Stress-Free Journey
Al Suwaidi highlighted the comfort of rail travel compared to road commutes: “On the road, traffic congestion can be stressful. On the train, it’s smooth, user-friendly, and you can use your time efficiently.”
Etihad Rail Network Overview
The 900-kilometer Etihad Rail network connects key passenger stations, freight terminals, and operational depots across the UAE. A map displayed at the Global Rail Conference in Abu Dhabi shows the network linking Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, and extending to Oman’s Sohar and Al Buraimi facilities.
Stations and facilities include:
- Abu Dhabi: Ghuweifat freight terminal, Sila passenger station, Ruwais Island, Ruwais Port freight terminal
- Mirfa and Habshan: Operational depots, Madinat Zayed and Mezzerah passenger stations
- Dubai: Freight terminals at Dubai Industrial City and Jebel Ali Port, passenger station near Al Maktoum Airport
- Northern Emirates: Sharjah and Al Dhaid stations, Al Ghayl dry port, Siji freight terminals, Fujairah passenger and freight stations
Passenger Experience and Future Plans
The network uses modern trains with advanced passenger amenities. Etihad Rail has partnered with French operator Keolis International to form Etihad Rail Mobility, a joint venture set to begin operating passenger services in 2026. The partnership aims to deliver a safe, reliable, and sustainable travel experience, integrating buses, taxis, car rentals, and parking to facilitate seamless passenger connections.
Workforce and Training
Keolis will oversee driver training, staff recruitment, and operational management to ensure readiness for the network’s launch. According to Alistair Gordon, CEO of Keolis UK, Middle East, and India, the initiative will make it easier for residents and tourists to travel efficiently across the UAE while providing high-quality passenger services.
