The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has launched India’s first fleet of electric heavy trucks equipped with swappable batteries at the Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal. The initial rollout includes 50 vehicles, with plans to expand to 80 by the end of the year.

Battery Swap Infrastructure for Seamless Operations
Alongside the rollout, JNPA commissioned a dedicated heavy‑duty battery swap station to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations. The port authority aims to convert nearly 90% of its internal fleet—about 600 heavy trucks—to electric vehicles by December 2026.
Support from Government and Dignitaries
The event was officiated by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, with participation from senior officials including R. Lakshmanan and Unmesh Sharad Wagh.
Driving Sustainability and Modernization
This initiative aligns with India’s broader sustainability and clean mobility goals, including reducing carbon emissions, minimizing particulate pollution, and supporting the National Electric Mobility Mission. It also forms part of port modernization under the National Logistics Policy and the PM Gati Shakti plan.
Strategic Partnerships for Future Growth
A related MoU was signed with the Isaac Centre for Public Policy, Ashoka University, to develop a benchmark framework for cost- and port-based tariffs across different cargo types, strengthening operational efficiency and policy support for electric mobility in ports.
