British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to visit India around the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, scheduled for October 7–9, according to senior diplomatic sources.

Summit-Level Talks with Modi
During the visit, Starmer will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for summit-level discussions. The visit comes just over two months after Modi traveled to the U.K. for the signing of the U.K.-India free trade agreement, which is still awaiting ratification in the U.K. and is anticipated to take effect in 2026. The two countries are also negotiating a bilateral investment treaty and have launched a Technology Security Initiative in July of last year.
Geopolitical Context
Recent months have seen significant shifts in global trade and geopolitics. U.S.-India relations have been strained due to a 50% tariff on Indian exports, including a 25% penalty related to India’s energy and arms trade with Russia. The European Union has expressed interest in strengthening ties with India but raised concerns over India’s military exercises with Russia and oil purchases from the country. Meanwhile, the U.K. recently hosted U.S. President Donald Trump, signing agreements in technology and nuclear energy.
Areas of Cooperation
The upcoming India visit is expected to include discussions on technology, defense, and security. Education cooperation is also on the agenda, with several U.K. universities, including the University of Southampton, planning to open campuses in India.
Political and Economic Significance
For Starmer, the trip presents an opportunity to demonstrate progress on trade deals and promote British economic interests, including job creation and attracting investment, amid domestic political challenges.
Additional Visit Plans
The two Prime Ministers are also likely to visit a second Indian city, aside from Mumbai, though the location has not yet been finalized.
