The Indian Navy has signed a ₹66 crore contract with Odisha-based startup Coratia Technologies for the supply of domestically developed Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (UWROVs) and an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV). The deal aims to enhance underwater surveillance, enable sonar mapping, and strengthen India’s self-reliance in defence technology.

Advanced Capabilities for Naval Operations
Under the agreement, Coratia will deliver three platforms—Jalasimha, Jaladuta, and Navya (ASV)—capable of seabed mapping and real-time AI-driven data processing. This marks the first large-scale induction of India-built UWROVs into active naval service, reducing reliance on foreign suppliers and mitigating trade and tariff uncertainties.
Boosting Indigenous Innovation
Debendra Pradhan, CEO and co-founder of Coratia, said the deal recognizes India’s capability to design and manufacture mission-critical underwater systems. CTO Biswajit Swain added that indigenous UWROVs will lower costs and reinforce the Navy’s commitment to the country’s research and innovation ecosystem, including initiatives like iDEX.
Investor Confidence and Strategic Support
Investors have expressed confidence in Coratia’s role in India’s defence-tech sector. Raj Sethia of MGF Kavachh said the investment supports both a promising startup and the broader Make in India vision, helping India position itself as a global technology leader.
UWROVs Beyond Naval Use
Coratia’s underwater robots are designed with cost-efficiency and dual-use in mind. They are already employed by SAIL, Indian Oil, Indian Railways, and Tata Steel for applications such as dam and bridge inspections, offshore energy monitoring, subsea pipeline checks, marine ecosystem studies, and disaster response.
Expanding in a Growing Market
The global underwater robotics market, valued at $5.08 billion in 2025, is projected to reach $9.53 billion by 2030, reflecting a 13.39% CAGR. In July 2025, Coratia raised ₹17.4 crore in a Pre-Series A round led by MGF Kavachh, with support from Pontaq Ventures India, to expand R&D, strengthen intellectual property rights, and explore exports.
Strategic Advantage for the Indian Navy
The partnership provides the Indian Navy with cost-efficient, homegrown underwater robotics at a time when maritime technology is becoming increasingly crucial. For Coratia, this deal marks its first major defence contract and positions it as a key player in India’s defence innovation ecosystem.
